The diet of the ancient Greeks used to come from a detailed study of the needs of the body and the spirit. Their diet was directly related to philosophy and they followed rules that combined pleasure and well-being.
The main characteristic of their diet was frugality. They ate cereals, greens, onions, olives, fish as a main food, rarely meat, fava beans, lentils, fruits and sweets as well as wine. They had two light meals during the day and a supper. Hippocrates used to say: “Food is your medicine, and your medicine is your food”.
In modern times many diseases are attributed to diet such as celiac disease.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease characterized by gluten intolerance and is associated with chronic inflammation of the small intestine and destruction of the intestinal tract.
In order to successfully treat the disease all sources of gluten should be entirely excluded from the diet.
Yet, that does not mean that the disease will compromise people’s quality of life or prevent them from enjoying and pleasures of life.
